- What did you do today?
We did the first part of the two projects, Extraction of Caffeine from Beverages. It was quite a big project and we spend most of our time doing it. Below are some pictures of what happened today:
- What did you learn today?
I have learned a lot of things today. I had a look at the amount of caffeine in Black Tea and Green Tea. I have learned about the reasons as to why we do certain things during the experiment. Apart from the new scientific knowledge, I learned to be resilient as well as the patience needed in an experiment. We had placed 1 filter paper instead if 2 hence, our set-up became filled with foam. We had to repeat the same steps many times and it got irritating at times.
- How do you feel about today’s activities?
I have learned a lot of things about caffeine today, their positive and negative effects of it. I also understood where caffeine can be found. I used to think that it can only be found in coffee, but today I found out that they are also present in teas and soft drinks like coke. During the briefing, I learn that caffeine is good as they would make you feel energized. However, it also has negative effects like Insomnia, Nervousness, Restlessness, Irritability, Stomach upset, Fast heartbeat, Muscle tremors. You may even die in serious case.
It was also explained that the purpose of this experiment is to allows us to measure the amount of caffeine in drinks to ensure that the above mention side effects do not happen if you consume that drink. It is recommended to consume around 500 - 600 mg of caffeine a day only.
Today had been an insightful and interesting day, as we had most of the day doing the experiment and learning about the different apparatus and adding new knowledge. I am looking forward to another similar day tomorrow!
