Day 2

25 May 2016, Wednesday
  • What did you do today?
Today we did the second project, Extraction and Identification of Artificial Colours. Below are some pictures taken during the day:

  • What did you learn today?
Today had been another interesting day. The project we did today had been shorter and simpler but definitely interesting like yesterday's project. One new thing I learn was that artificial colours actually add no nutritional value to the food. I actually thought it did. It is just added to make the food look more appealing. However, some new artificial colours maybe bad for the human body. Hence, this experiment is important to find out if the artificial colours would cause any side effects.
  • How do you feel about today’s activities?
We did our experiment with M&M chocolate. We all have seen and tasted that colourful chocolate. However, today's experiment was not for us to eat it but to find out more about the artificial colours in it. The way we did it was using Thin Layer Chromatography. This is a fast and efficient way to find out about the ingredients in the artificial colours.
It was a fun and rather simple experiment to do, compared to yesterday's experiment. We get to experience  preparing the wool, extraction of the dye as well as doing the Thin Layer Chromatography.

  • What new questions do you have regarding the discipline?
None.
